CHALLENGE: 30 Days and 30 Photos, Days 25-29

"Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can." -Arthur Ashe

It's been another heads down focus for a big project, and I've been staring at textures all week. So, here are some of the ones the client did not choose. I can't show you the ones they did, but I will say they got the best of the lot.

I took so many shots of textures this week and these are just 5 of them. Unlike previous posts where I shared shots from specific days, I decided not to limit my selections by day for this post.

Post processing was extremely minimal for adding blur and de/saturation.

Tomorrow will be my last day of this #30DaysAnd30Photos challenge. I learned a lot. Stay tuned to find out what.

CHALLENGE: 30 Days and 30 Photos, Days 20-24

"The gardens will be remembered long after the Daily News and all other newspapers in Los Angeles perhaps, are forgotten." -Elias Manchester Boddy, Founder of Descanso Gardens

Heads down in another project, I've found my biggest obstacle of the #30DaysAnd30Photos challenge remains finding the time for offloading and processing images from my CF cards. I need to move to the use of the SD cards + card reader + iPad Pro for image processing. I very much dislike post processing. The joy of making images is in the making of the image in camera.

Much of what we often see in a final image that moves us can be attributed to a little bit of image enhancement or manipulation on the computer after the image has left the box with the light sensor. I am still searching for the elements of joy that can draw me to spend more time in the edit.

If you're doing any kind of photo challenge, I'd love to follow along. Let me know in the comments or on Twitter @lianalehua

As always, thank you for spending a bit of time here with me today.

DAY 20: Sunset at the Beach

This is a tone-mapped image consisting of 5 bracketed shots. I did a quick import into Lightroom CC and ran the HDR Merge feature. There were no additional edits.

DAY 21: Flowers Flowers Everywhere

I was heads down in a project on days 21-24 and was surrounded by flowers. While these flowers were not the best subject (kind of ragged looking), I thought these were pretty.

I increased exposure of a single RAW image, and no other edits were made.

DAY 22: Tilt

I was on a steep hillside and was kind of thrown off to look along the path and see these trees at this angle. I felt compelled to drift to the right as I walked this very defined path.

I shot this as a 5 bracket HDR and as a single RAW file using the settings listed below the image. I decided the single RAW file was enough and increased exposure from that one file vs fussing with tone mapping the 5 bracketed images.

DAY 23: Cherry Blossoms

They are a-bloomin', and Descanzo Gardens held its Cherry Blossom opening weekend. There were sure to be hoards of people attending. As a member of Descanzo Gardens, I am afforded the privilege of early entry before the general public and was grateful for being one of only three members to take advantage of the time.

DAY 24: Selfie

On day two of the Cherry Blossom opening weekend at Descanzo Gardens, I took the opportunity to be alone with this Cherry Blossom tree. Do you see me?

I set my camera timer to 10 seconds and ran into position. It was fun.

I stacked 3 bracketed images for this one. No additional post processing was done.

CHALLENGE: 30 Days and 30 Photos, Days 15-19

"How did it get so late so soon? It's night before it's afternoon. December is here before it's June. My goodness how the time has flewn. How did it get so late so soon?" -Dr. Seuss

I am learning to be greatful for opportunity, and sometime that comes at a cost. These last few days, that cost has been time. So, here are some of my unedited pics from the last 5 days, because this challenge is about shooting every day, not blogging everyday. :D

In case you missed it (ICYMI), at the end of 14 days I'm getting used to carrying my DSLR again. More importantly, I'm enjoying it again. If you're new here, welcome. Thank you for visiting whoever you may be. Thanks to Ant Pruitt, who initiated the #30DaysAnd30Photos challenge for himself. I just invited myself along.

So, why lug around my Canon 5D Mark III instead of just using my iPhone? The body alone is 30.3 ounces/890. You can double this number when adding a lens. I want to create art and with that engage the sense and process that goes along with it. I can do that with a smartphone, but there is something about being able to merge the most extreme parts of a scenes light(s), color(s), and subject(s) that is sometimes more available with my DSLR.

In this 30 day challenge, I am taking pictures every day. More often than not, I get images I don't love. But, I have to create and get out of my head about things. I can tend to over analyze tasks or situations to the extent that I'm paralyzed and do nothing. So, I'm choosing to do something and iterate. If you're interested in seeing the challenge results so far, here is a list of days 1-14.

Day 1: ARTIC: Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center
Day 2: Conoco-Phillips Plant
Day 3: DJ White Rabbit At The Mad Tea Party, Disney California Adventure
Day 4: Sunset at Paradise Pier, Disney California Adventure
Day 5: Sunset at Santa Monica Pier
Day 6: Playful Racing With Lightning McQueen and Sally Carrera
Day 7: Downtown LA at LADWP
Day 8: A Couple At The Getty
Day 9: Aaron the Jesus Surfer
Day 10: Bing and Buddy
Day 11: Under the Newport Beach Pier
Day 12: Seaside Donuts Bakery
Day 13: Dory Fleet Market
Day 14: Surfers at Huntington Beach Pier

I welcome your comments, and please feel free to share and subscribe if you are so inclined. And, I would appreciate it if you take the time to visit Ant's portfolio, too. There's good stuff happening over there.

Thank you!
